BUILDING WITH GREEN ROOF OR CEILING. ECOLOGICAL ARCHITECTURE

The California Academy of Sciences (San Francisco) opened a few weeks ago, a project of Italian architect Renzo Piano. Whopping for their great green cover. Approximately 1.7 million plants and flowers native living in the roof that do not require artificial irrigation. Which fulfills the function of keeping the building cool and at a time to gather millions of gallons of water that is reused in large part to use the museum.

The roof has 60,000 photovoltaic cells that produce 213.000 kWh, saving between 5 and 10% of electricity, generates 15% of the electricity it consumes.
Inside, the temperature is cool despite the heat outside as there are only air conditioning in a few areas of the building. Ventilation systems are used to allow entry and exit of air.
Recycling has been instrumental in the project, old jeans used for insulation in the walls.
90% was recycled materials from demolition of the former building.
The project conserves two limestone walls of the former building.
32,000 tons of sand, soil removed during excavation for the new building.
